This was a short meeting, mostly discussions about elections and plans for the summer and/or next semester.

Mailbox

We should probably get a mailbox on our door, we keep having QSL cards slid under our door. Would be easier and better to store in mailbox. Would be good to look into how we’re getting mail as well. Maybe there is some huge pile of unread mail somewhere?

Update as of 5/21/2023: There is an unopened mailbox in the junk room, all we need to do is hang that somewhere and we’re good.

E-Mail Server

Joe talked about the need for a W3EAX email account so that emails and knowledge can be passed between club leaders easily. He mentioned how other clubs that he is involved in have this specifically and it works great for knowledge transfer between position holders. At the meeting we checked and w3eax.radio@gmail.com is available. We can follow up with Yehuda on this to see if he has any suggestions for hosting email.

Funding Updates

Joe talked to STAMP and SFF, learned that there is an 18 month deadline before we have to submit and update to the committee. Joe visited the STAMP admin offices and learned that Nicole has fully moved out of her position. He is currently waiting on emails from the director of STAMP and the club staff advisor for how to move forward.

Ideas for Next Semester

We discussed ideas for outreach for the summer and more importantly next semester. We discussed setting up a table outside of STAMP, how lots of clubs do, and try and make contacts from there. Joe got the inspiration from this photo of W3EAX members doing exactly that. The photo was taken sometime in the mid 70s and was found on WB2HTO’s website.

Original Caption: W3EAX/3, broadcasting in front of the Student Union Building as part of a public relations plan to let UMD students know about ham radio. That’s Rick, WA3UOO (now K8SV) and WA3SXH and George, WB3EMQ.

We also discussed other various ideas, such as setting up radios on McKeldin and more Maryland Day appearances, as the last one went very well.

Election

The election for new officers continues, but it seems only one person has nominated themselves. Joe decided he would nominate himself as well, and if he does end up studying abroad next semester, he can delegate someone else to be acting/interim in his position.

We said we would make one last call for nominations tonight on the discord. If there are more than two candidates, we will do around 2 weeks of voting through a google form.
